John Raskin, executive director of Riders Alliance held a happy hour conversation with New Yorkers, to discuss the impending closure of the L line train due to repairs, as well as the sweeping issues transit riders face as a result of nearly $20 billion in deferred maintenance. Riders Alliance member and daily subway rider, Dmitry Dement commented on the steep increase in monthly delays since 2012, which is attributed to nearly a century of underinvestment in the subway system. Both Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio have proposed solutions to pay for the billions of dollars needed to repair the New York City subway system. With elections coming up for both Cuomo and de Blasio, New York City residents hope that transit finally takes center stage as an issue to campaign around.
